SEO in the age of AI search: how to show up in AI answers as well as Google

Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity are changing how people find businesses. Here is what still works, what has changed and the practical steps to stay visible.

Key takeaways

  • AI search features are built on top of normal web indexing, so classic technical SEO still comes first.
  • Clear, direct answers, original experience and consistent facts about your business make you easier to cite.
  • Know the difference between crawlers used for AI training and those used for AI search before blocking anything.
  • Measure AI referrals separately and optimise for the clicks you do get, not only raw traffic.

For twenty years, search meant a list of ten blue links. That is no longer the whole picture. Google shows AI Overviews above many results and offers a conversational AI Mode. ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants answer questions directly and cite a handful of sources. Many people now get an answer without clicking anything at all.

Business owners understandably ask whether SEO still matters, and what they should do differently. The short answer: the fundamentals matter more than ever, and a few additions help you get cited by AI systems.

How AI search actually finds content

AI search features do not invent a separate web. Google has said that its AI features draw on its normal search index, and that the same best practices apply: if a page is not crawlable and indexed, it cannot appear in an AI Overview. Assistants such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity run their own crawlers and also rely on search indexes. When they answer, they typically retrieve a set of relevant pages, read them and write a summary with citations.

That retrieval step is where your website competes. Pages that are easy to crawl, clearly structured and directly answer the question are far more likely to be selected and quoted.

The fundamentals that still decide visibility

  • Crawlable, indexable pages: correct robots rules, working sitemaps, no important content hidden behind logins or heavy client-side rendering.
  • Fast, stable pages on mobile, measured by Core Web Vitals.
  • A clear site structure with descriptive URLs, headings and internal links.
  • Genuinely useful content written for people, demonstrating real experience and expertise.
  • Signals of trust: an about page, real contact details, author information, reviews and mentions on other reputable sites.

What helps you get cited by AI answers

Answer the question early and plainly

AI systems look for passages that directly answer a query. Put a clear, one or two sentence answer near the top of a page or section, then go into detail. Use question-style headings that match how people actually ask, such as “How long does a website rebuild take?”.

Offer something original

If your page says the same thing as a hundred others, there is little reason to cite it. Original data, real examples, case studies, prices, process details and first-hand experience give AI systems, and readers, a reason to point to you.

Keep facts about your business consistent

Assistants form a picture of your business from many sources. Make sure your name, address, services, opening hours and contact details match across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Inconsistent facts lead to inconsistent answers.

Use structured data where it fits

Schema.org markup for your organisation, local business, products, articles, FAQs and breadcrumbs helps machines understand what a page is about. It is not a guarantee of anything, but it removes ambiguity and supports rich results in classic search.

Earn mentions elsewhere

Reviews, press coverage, industry directories and community discussions all shape how AI systems describe you. A brand that is discussed across the web is far more likely to be recommended than one that only talks about itself.

Controlling AI crawlers

Your robots.txt file lets you allow or block specific crawlers. It is worth understanding which is which before making changes:

User agentOperatorWhat it is used for
GooglebotGoogleSearch indexing, including AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google-ExtendedGoogleControls use of content for Gemini model training and grounding; does not affect Search ranking or inclusion
GPTBotOpenAICollecting content for training OpenAI models
OAI-SearchBotOpenAISurfacing websites in ChatGPT search results
PerplexityBotPerplexityIndexing for Perplexity answers

You may also see proposals such as an llms.txt file that summarises a site for language models. At the time of writing, it is an informal proposal rather than a standard used by the major search engines, so treat it as optional.

Measuring visibility when clicks fall

When AI answers satisfy more queries directly, impressions can rise while clicks fall. That makes a few measurements more important:

  • Google Search Console: AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in your overall performance data, so watch impressions, clicks and click-through rate by page and query.
  • Analytics referrals: track visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other assistants as their own channel.
  • Branded search: growth in people searching for your name is a strong sign that AI and offline exposure are working.
  • Conversion rate: visitors arriving from AI answers have often already done their research, so they may convert better.

A practical action plan

  1. Fix technical basics: indexing errors, sitemaps, page speed and mobile usability.
  2. Audit your top 20 pages and add a direct answer to the main question at the top of each.
  3. Add or update structured data for your organisation, services, articles and FAQs.
  4. Make sure business details are identical everywhere they appear online.
  5. Publish one genuinely original piece of content a month: data, a detailed case study or a strong opinion backed by experience.
  6. Review your robots.txt rules for AI crawlers and make deliberate choices.
  7. Set up AI referral tracking and review it monthly alongside Search Console.

The businesses that do well in AI search are not gaming it. They have fast, well-structured websites, they publish things worth citing, and they are talked about. If you would like a review of how your site appears in both classic and AI search, we can help you prioritise the changes that matter most.
